‘Focused Blokes’ is a six-weekly gathering of shed members where the blokes can talk over a meal about issues pertaining to the mental health side of their lives. Blokes can either sit and listen or contribute to the discussion. The ‘Focused Blokes’ was established under the guidance of Louise Ramsay, a Clinical Psychologist, who led the development of ‘Our Ways of Working’ to support men through challenging times. It has been meeting since October 2022 with most participants reporting positive outcomes.

A key feature of the ‘Focused Blokes’ programme is its simple but effective approach: participants are encouraged to listen respectfully, share only if they wish, and offer advice only when invited. This creates a supportive and confidential environment where men can speak openly and feel heard.

We are now working with researchers at ANU to quantify the impact of the ‘Focused Blokes’ programme with a view to sharing this initiative with other Men’s Sheds across Australia. Both the programme and the associated research have the strong support of the government’s Special Envoy for Men’s Health, Dan Repacholi MP.

We have received the Australian Men’s Shed Association (AMSA) National Healthy Shed Award at the 11th National Men’s Shed Gathering for the ‘Focused Blokes’ programme.

Refer to the When Are We Open Page for the next Focused Blokes gathering. New participants are always welcome.
